Homemade Pop tarts!

I made pop tarts this morning! YUM!
I started with pie crust made with whole wheat pastry flour (you can use any pie crust recipe or use the pre-made stuff), rolled it out, and cut it into 3x4 rectangles.
I toped each one with either homemade apple butter or raspberry jam (you can use any filling you think sounds good, be creative! My kids were thinking of all sorts of possibilities, but I kept it simple).I placed another rectangle of dough on each one and pressed the edges together and pierced each one with a fork. Then I baked them up (400 for about 15 minutes seemed to do just right).

After they had cooled a bit I frosted them all and sprinkled cinnamon sugar on the apple ones and multi colored sprinkles on the raspberry ones.
The kids were more than happy to gobble these up for breakfast this morning!

  1. These look delicious! I love that you used whole wheat pastry flour (which for some reason is not sold anywhere around here!) The kids look happy! Mine would be thrilled since I never buy PopTarts.

  2. I have not even looked to see if it is sold around here, I ground my own using soft white wheat. A wheat grinder is a great investment!

  6. Rebecca- Thanks! I'm doing well, other than a cold that has me down a bit. I'm starting to feel the third trimester; though I think I've still got a few good weeks left in me! How are you doing?

  9. Wow, thanks for the recipe. Next time I'll do homemade buttery crust. Great this way though when you need something quick! I am thinking Smucker's Hot Fudge Sauce for ice cream and peanut butter as a filling...reese's cup pop-tart :)
    Thanks again,

  13. The frosting is just powdered sugar, water or milk, and vanilla mixed together.
